Scratches sometimes become visible only after a builders’ clean, when low sunlight highlights lines that were difficult to see during the construction work. Damage can come from grit trapped under a scraper, abrasive pads, dry scraping or construction debris dragged across the glass.
Typical signs of cleaning-related damage
- Parallel scraper lines.
- Fine swirls or haze.
- Long scratches following a cleaning stroke.
- Clusters of marks near render, plaster or paint residue.
Do not keep scraping the pane
If scratching is suspected, continuing with the same cleaning method can make the affected area larger. Photograph the damage in strong angled light and record which panes are affected before further work takes place.
Can the scratches be restored?
Some surface scratching is suitable for professional glass polishing. The result depends on the depth and spread of the damage, the glass type, any coatings and the finish required for handover. Deep or widespread damage may be better replaced.
Useful information for contractors and homeowners
For several panes, photograph each elevation and identify the worst examples. Include approximate pane sizes and whether the glass is residential, shopfront or other commercial glazing.
