A deep scratch does not have a simple pass-or-fail measurement that applies to every pane. Professional glass scratch removal works by carefully refining the damaged surface and blending the treated area back to optical clarity, so the deeper the damage, the more material and working area may be involved.
That is why a photograph or a quick fingernail test can help with an initial assessment, but neither can guarantee that a particular scratch is suitable for polishing. The glass itself, the position of the damage and the finish that can be achieved all matter.
Why scratch depth matters
A shallow surface scratch may require relatively little refinement. A deeper score can require a wider blended area to avoid leaving a visible low spot or optical distortion. At some point the amount of material that would need to be removed can make restoration impractical or produce an unacceptable visual result.
A professional assessment should therefore consider the complete damaged area rather than concentrating only on the deepest point of one line.
Is the fingernail test enough?
If a scratch catches a fingernail, that can be a useful indication that it is more than a very fine surface mark. It is not, however, a reliable rule that says a scratch can or cannot be restored. Two scratches that feel similar can behave differently because of their width, length, position, the glass type or a surface coating.
What else affects repair suitability?
- The depth, width and total area of the scratching.
- Whether the damage is close to an edge or associated with cracking or other structural damage.
- The type of glass and whether the surface has a coating or treatment.
- How visible the treated area will be in reflected light and normal viewing angles.
- Access to the pane and whether the surrounding frame or finishes can be protected properly.
- Whether restoration is a sensible alternative to replacing the complete pane or sealed unit.
When might replacement be the better option?
Cracked glass, edge damage, structural defects, some specialist coated surfaces and scratches that would require excessive material removal may be better dealt with by replacement or another specialist solution. The purpose of an assessment is to identify that before unnecessary polishing work starts.
