Scratches on a glass dining table, coffee table or glass tabletop do not automatically mean the glass needs replacing. Professional polishing may remove or substantially improve suitable surface scratches, but the right approach depends on the glass itself and the damage.
Can scratches be polished out of a glass table?
Often, suitable scratches can be improved through professional glass polishing. The key word is suitable: scratch depth, glass type, coatings, edge location and access all matter. We assess those factors before recommending restoration.
What we check before polishing
- How deep and widespread the scratches appear to be.
- Whether the glass has a coating, film, printed finish or other surface treatment.
- How close the damage is to an edge, corner, hole or fitting.
- Whether there is safe access to work on the affected face of the glass.
What about smoked or tinted glass tables?
Smoked, tinted and coloured glass needs assessment before any polishing is recommended. Some colour is within the glass itself, while other finishes can involve a surface coating or treatment. Photos help us identify what needs checking, but we will not promise a polishing result until the glass and damage appear suitable.
What photos should you send for a quote?
- One wider photo showing the whole table or glass panel.
- One or two close-up photos of the scratches with light reflecting across them.
- A photo showing any nearby edge, corner, fixing, printed area or tinted finish.
- Approximate glass dimensions and your location.
Clear photos usually let us give a much better first assessment before arranging a visit.
Repair or replace?
Replacement may still be the better option for unsuitable damage, cracked glass, certain coatings or situations where safe polishing access is limited. Where restoration is suitable, polishing can avoid replacing an otherwise usable glass panel. We assess each job on its own merits rather than promising that every scratch can be removed.
