Scratched Shopfront Glass After Signage or a Refit: Repair or Replace?

Large glazed shopfront where scratches after signage removal or refit may be restorable

A shop refit or signage change can reveal scratches that were previously hidden by vinyl, displays or old graphics. Razor blades, scrapers, grit and construction work can also leave marks across otherwise sound shopfront glass.

Why shopfront scratches matter

Large panes show damage clearly, particularly under street lighting and direct sun. Replacement can be costly and may involve disruption, boarding or arranging glazing work outside trading hours.

Can the existing pane be restored?

Suitable surface scratches may be removable or capable of substantial improvement through professional polishing. The decision depends on depth, area, glass type, coatings and whether the damage is close to an edge.

Graffiti and scratch damage are not always the same

Paint or marker graffiti may be primarily a cleaning issue. Scratched tags and acid-etched marks affect the glass itself and require a different assessment. See our glass graffiti and acid-etch restoration page for more information.

For a quick initial assessment

Send close-up photographs plus a full view of the shopfront, approximate pane dimensions and the business postcode. For multiple panes, number the photos so the damage can be matched to each panel.
