Scratches on Roof Lantern Glass: Can They Be Polished Out?

Scratches on roof lantern glass are particularly visible when daylight catches the pane. Some superficial marks may be suitable for professional glass polishing, but access, coatings, glass construction and scratch depth must all be checked first.

Why roof lantern glass gets scratched

Fine scratches can be caused by grit caught under a squeegee, abrasive cloths, scrapers, construction dust or tools used during an extension or roof installation. Some marks that look like scratches are actually mineral deposits, surface etching or coating damage. These problems need different treatment.

Can the scratches be polished out?

Specialist polishing may improve or remove some light surface scratches on suitable glass. Deep grooves may require removing too much material and risk optical distortion or lensing. There is no guaranteed result: the size and depth of the damage, its position and the glass specification all matter. A fingernail test is not a reliable substitute for assessment.

Safe access is essential

Roof lanterns can be high, sloping and difficult to reach. Work depends on safe access, surrounding frames and weather. Never stand or kneel on overhead glazing or climb onto a roof to photograph damage. Some jobs require professional access equipment, and others are not practical to polish safely.

Coatings and double-glazed units

Roof lanterns may use toughened or laminated safety glass, sealed double-glazed units, and solar-control or self-cleaning coatings. Polishing certain coated surfaces can permanently damage their finish. Scratches between panes cannot be reached from the outside. If the glass is cracked, edge-damaged or structurally unsafe, ask a glazing specialist about replacement.

Repair or replacement?

Restoration can sometimes save disruption and replacement costs when damage is light, isolated and safely accessible. Replacement may be better where marks are deep or extensive, the coating is affected, or polishing could cause distortion. We assess suitability before recommending work.

Request a free initial photo assessment

For roof lanterns in Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Chalfont St Peter, Windsor, Ascot, Virginia Water, Marlow and surrounding areas, send two or three clear photos or a short video: a close-up of the scratch, a view of the whole pane, and a picture showing access. Include the postcode and any known glass or coating details. Please photograph only from a safe position.

Use our free glass damage assessment form. Read more about glass scratch removal and commercial glass restoration. An initial assessment is not a promise that a scratch can be removed.

Want your own glass assessed?

Send a close-up of the damage, a wider photo of the whole pane or item, approximate dimensions and your postcode for an initial assessment.
