Fine scratches discovered after window cleaning can be frustrating, especially when they only become obvious once sunlight catches the glass. Marks may appear as straight lines, groups of scratches or widespread fine abrasion.
Did a scraper cause the scratches?
A scraper itself does not automatically damage suitable glass when used correctly, but contamination, trapped grit, damaged blades or unsuitable technique can result in scratching. It is not always possible to identify the cause simply by looking at a photograph.
Can scraper scratches be polished out?
Many scratches can be professionally removed or substantially improved. The amount of work depends on depth, quantity and the area affected. A single isolated line is a different restoration job from hundreds of marks spread across a large pane.
Do I need a new window?
Not necessarily. If the pane is otherwise sound, restoration should be considered before replacement. This can be particularly worthwhile for large doors, expensive sealed units and architectural glazing.
We also cover damage caused during construction in our guide to scraper and building-work scratches.
Avoid DIY polishing on expensive glass
Trying abrasive compounds without the correct process can add haze or distortion. The first step should be establishing whether the scratches are suitable for professional restoration and what finish is realistically achievable.
Send photographs for an initial opinion
Photograph the whole pane in good light and then take several close-ups showing the scratches. Send them through our contact page and Elite Glass Restoration can advise on the next step.
